Vernon driver dies in Newfane crash

NEWFANE — A Vernon man has been identified as the victim of a single-vehicle crash on South Wardsboro Road in Newfane Friday morning.
Vermont State Police said Saturday that Robert Saunders, 55, of Vernon, died when his 2007 Chevrolet pickup truck went off the road and landed on its roof in a brook.
Saunders was headed north on South Wardsboro Road, which was muddy, police said, when he went over a steep bank and into the Wardsboro Brook.
Passersby found Saunders partially submerged, in the driver's seat buckled in with his seatbelt. Passersby got Saunders out of the truck and started CPR. He was taken to Grace Cottage Hospital by Rescue Inc., where he was pronounced dead later that morning.
