HARTFORD — A sewer plant expansion project has turned up some unlikely things in Hartford — including artifacts that could be thousands of years old.

The archaeological dig, which is part of the planned site of a White River Treatment Plant expansion, was required by the federal government. Charles Knight, assistant director of the University of Vermont's consulting archaeology program, says non-native stone flakes found in the soil suggest that people occupied the river bank there, and that the number and age of them make the site historically significant.

Now, the town and the project's engineers have to wait and see how the discovery will affect the project. Knight says the site shouldn't be built on, if possible.

Burlington, Vt., police use public message system

BURLINGTON (AP) — Police in Burlington have started offering the public a new way to get updates on traffic problems and crime alerts, and other Chittenden County agencies are considering a similar move.

Burlington's police department has signed up with Nixle.com, which allows officers to send updates about meetings, emergencies and other information to a Web site. People can receive the information via e-mail and text message, or Twitter and can specify certain areas of the city.

South Burlington Police Chief Trevor Whipple said his department also is testing the system, and several other area departments are considering it.

BROOKFIELD – Police ticketed a 60-year-old Randolph woman for driving too fast for conditions after she crashed her car on Interstate 89 on Friday evening.

Brenda Langevin was driving north on the highway in Brookfield when she lost control of her vehicle, hit the guardrail and came to a rest in the roadway, according to the Vermont State Police.

Langevin was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, police said.

Police said the bridge just south of the accident was iced over.
