POULTNEY — Firefighters from four towns managed to prevent flames from destroying a home on Lewis Road Tuesday afternoon, but the fire forced the family living in the double-wide trailer to find shelter elsewhere, Fire Chief David Winter said.
Firefighters from both Poultney and Castleton were called to the Poultney home, which is a weak stone's throw from the Castleton border, the chief said.
"When I got there, (Castleton firefighters) were already there," Winter said. "I asked their chief, 'Is this yours or mine,' and he said, 'It's yours by 50 feet.'"
Flames from the fire, which Winter said he believes started in the kitchen, had sprouted through the roof by the time Winter arrived. During the battle to control the blaze, fire crews from the two towns were joined by crews from Fair Haven and Hampton, N.Y.
After about an hour, the blaze was extinguished, leaving at least some portion of the home undamaged, the chief said.
No human was injured in the blaze, but two dogs and two cats were killed. Winter, who didn't return home until after 7 p.m., said he didn't know the homeowners' names.
However, he said, a husband and wife and their children lived in the home.
Winter said the blaze was not suspicious.
