CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Freshman Steven Whitney scored a pair of goals, junior John Muse made 30 saves and No. 16 Boston College extended its home winning streak against No. 15 Vermont to 10 games with Saturday night's 7-1 victory in front of 4,988 fans at Kelley Rink.
The Catamounts, who are now 1-4 on the road, fall to 3-4-1 overall and 2-3-1 in Hockey East Action. The Eagles improved to 4-2-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the Hockey East.
"Every mistake we made, they capitalized," Vermont coach Kevin Sneddon said. "They touched the puck, it turned to gold. We touched the puck, it turned to coal."
Junior Kyle Medvec scored Vermont's lone goal on the power play in the opening period. The Catamounts went 1-for-7 on the man advantage.
UVM sophomore goalie Rob Madore stopped eight shots and allowed four goals before being replaced by senior Mike Spillane at the start of the third period. Spillane had four saves and allowed three goals in the final 20 minutes.
Sophomore Jimmy Hayes had four assists for the Eagles. Sophomore Tommy Cross, senior Ben Smith and Steven Whitney each had power-play goals. Junior Joe Whitney, freshman Chris Kreider and sophomore Paul Carey also scored for the Eagles.
"I though they played great," Sneddon said. "They're explosive and when you start to give them chances they're going to make the most out of it. Certainly they were the far-better team tonight."
Trailing by a goal in the opening period after a Steven Whitney power-play goal, Medvec tied the game at 1 with a power-play goal of his own at 10:13. Medvec's slap shot from the high slot beat Muse to the upper-right corner. Junior Kevan Miller and freshman Sebastian Stålberg each assisted.
Vermont nearly took a 2-1 lead minutes later when sophomore Drew MacKenzie's wraparound attempt on the power play at 13:45 appeared to cross the goal line. The goal light went on but the officials ruled no goal after a 10-minute review.
After that, Steven Whitney scored his second of two goals with 23 seconds left in the first period give the Eagles a 2-1 lead. It was all Boston College after that.
Joe Whitney scored at 4:32 of the second period and Cross scored on the power play at 15:29 to make it 4-1 going to the final period.
Vermont outshot Boston College 15-8 in the opening period and 31-19 for the game. The Catamounts and Eagles wrap up their regular-season series today at 4 p.m. at Kelley Rink.
"The quicker we can flush this one the better," Sneddon said. "Certainly this is going to sting tonight but we've got to get back to work. This is hopefully a learning lesson."
