The Southwestern Vermont Council on Aging cordially invites you to attend its 2009 annual meeting to be held Dec. 2 at Maples Senior Living Community on General Wing Road off Stratton Road in Rutland.
The event will begin with breakfast refreshments at 9:30 a.m. followed by the formal program at 10 a.m.
We look forward to having you join us as we celebrate the accomplishments of the past year and highlight some of the council's programs and services designed to help area seniors to live as independently as possible in their own homes and communities.
You'll hear about our Case Management Program, Nutrition Services, Senior HelpLine, Community Development, services for caregivers and the several volunteer-based programs under our umbrella. New board members will also be elected.
We are pleased to have as our featured presenter Susan Wehry, M.D.
Having recently concluded a three-year project assisting Louisiana nursing homes hit hardest by hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Wehry and her colleagues are now using the lessons learned during the project to better assist those who work with elders in various capacities.
One of the most interesting findings from the project was that the staffs of the nursing homes showed remarkable resilience, extraordinary courage and exemplary leadership in the face of unbelievable tragedy.
Wehry's talk will be called "Psychological Resilience: Lessons learned from Katrina" and she will certainly explore with us the great importance of psychological resiliency to "successful aging."
We encourage you to join us for the 2009 annual meeting and we ask that if you can attend, use the entrance at the rear of the original Maples building.
