SHAFTSBURY – A Danby woman is facing a felony charge after police said she admitted to driving within 24 hours of taking about 10 different medical drugs.

Brenda Kelly, 48, of Danby, was arraigned on Tuesday in Bennington District Court for driving under the influence of drugs. Kelly was convicted of driving under the effect of a substance in February 1984 and October 2000, according to court records, although it's not clear from the records what those substances were.

In an affidavit, Vermont State Police Trooper Todd Wilkins said Kelly was stopped on Oct. 24 around 4 p.m. on Route 7A in Shaftsbury after another driver called police to say Kelly had swerving while driving.

Wilkins said Kelly gave him a list of nine drugs she had taken within the last 24 hours and also admitted to taking an "unknown muscle relaxer" for back pain. Kelly refused to allow police to take a drug sample.

Kelly pleaded not guilty to the charge on Tuesday. She is scheduled to be in court again on Jan. 13.
