BURLINGTON — Advocates of train travel who successfully fought a plan to cut service to Rutland last year are gearing up to promote rail travel to — and for — Vermont.

A nonprofit organization called the Vermont Rail Action Network, which planned a pair of events today in Burlington, says shipping by rail reduces air pollution and lowers fuel consumption.

Christopher Parker, executive director of the group, says it also hopes to raise awareness about passenger trains in Vermont — including two state-supported Amtrak trains — that give visitors a popular travel option for sightseeing.
