Vermont native Trevor Murphy is one round away from the final stage of PGA Tour Qualifying School.
Murphy fired a 5-under par 67 on Friday to work his way into the top 20 at Southern Hills Plantation Club in Brooksville, Fla. Through three rounds of the second stage of Q School he stands at 7-under par and is in a tie for 16th place.
The top 21 players and ties will go on to the final stage and as of Friday, the St. Johnsbury native had a one-shot cushion. Murphy has rounds of 69, 73 and 67 so far.
Now living in Scottsdale, Ariz., the three-time Vermont Am champion is attempting to find fulltime work on the PGA Tour. He has had two experiences on Tour, at the 2007 Wachovia Championship and the 2008 U.S. Open, where he made the cut.
Not faring as well is Bennington native Dustin Cone, who is at 11-over par and tied for 66th place after three rounds at Hombre Golf Club in Panama City Beach, Fla. Cone has had rounds of 75, 75 and 74. The top 20 players will advance from that site.
The top 20 will advance from the Pine Mountain, Ga., site, the Callaway Gardens Mountain View Golf Club, where Milford, Conn.'s Steve Sokol is tied for 48th. Sokol, the runner-up to Cone in the 1999 Vermont Amateur, is four shots off the pace with a lot of people to pass with only today's round left to play.
The final stage of Q School takes place Dec. 2-7 at Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach, Fla.
