SPRINGFIELD — Archaeologist Gail Golec will discuss the history of Bellows Falls at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Nolin Murray Center.

Golec's program, "The Prehistory of the Great Falls," will cover the history of the area, as well as the basics of archaeology, what constitutes an artifact, how sites are dated and the importance of treating sites respectfully. She will delve into the background of the Abenakis, the American Indian tribe that inhabited the area for more than 7,000 years.

Tuesday's program will be the last of the fall 2009 semester for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, which is affiliated with the University of Vermont and is a local membership program geared towards seniors 50 years and older who want to engage in meaningful learning.

To join the mailing list to receive a complete brochure listing details of the winter/spring 2010 semester, call 885-8390, ext. 8550, and leave a name and address. The complete Springfield and statewide list is also available at www.learn. uvm.edu/osher.
