BARRE — A Washington County sheriff’s deputy is under suspension after a personal weapon he brought to the county courthouse in Barre went off.
The name of the deputy was not released.
WCAX-television says the deputy was in a section of the courthouse Wednesday where he was screening people to ensure they did not bring weapons into court when the shot was fired.
Sheriff Sam Hill says it was against policy for the deputy to bring a personal weapon to work.
Hill says the deputy thought the gun was unloaded, but it discharged as he was handling it.
The bullet hit the floor and disintegrated.
Hill says it was lucky no one was hurt.
