Norwich prevails in 1st round of Hockenbury Classic

NORTHFIELD – Freshman Ryan Williams scored a career-high 18 points, and junior Jaren Jeffcoat added 12 points as the Norwich University men's basketball team got past St. Joseph's College, 79-68, in the first round of the Ed Hockenbury Classic Saturday at Andrews Hall.

Junior Quincy Williams and senior Israel Guardado each chipped in 10 points apiece for the Cadets (4-1). Sophomore Darrel Marshall and freshman Nickolai Havoutis added nine points apiece. Havoutis added a game-high six assists as well.

With the victory, Norwich (4-1) advances to the Ed Hockenbury Classic championship game, where the Cadets will face the winner of the Wesleyan-Green Mountain contest today at 3 p.m.



MEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Vermont 88, N.J. Tech 49

NEWARK, N.J. — Maurice Joseph scored 19 points to lead Vermont past N.J. Tech 88-49 on Saturday. Joseph shot 5 for 7 and nailed four 3-pointers for the Catamounts (5-4). Ben Crenca chipped in with 15 points, while Marqus Blakely added 13.

After holding a 39-32 lead at halftime, Vermont opened the second half with an 11-2 run to take a 50-34 advantage. N.J. Tech was later held scoreless for almost five minutes, and the Catamounts capped a 17-0 run with 9:25 left to put the contest out of reach.

Isaiah Wilkerson led the Highlanders (3-5) with 15 points, and Drejon Scott added 11.



Vermont Tech 80,

Southern Maine 71

RANDOLPH – The Vermont Tech men's basketball team battled to the final whistle and defeated Southern Maine Tech 80-71 on Saturday.

Linden Smith-Hyde led the Green Knights with 28 points and nine rebounds, and teammate Kevin Carr had 21 points. Paul Holland had 15 points to lead Southern Maine.

"We accomplished what we wanted to do on defense," VTC coach John Dyer said. "We covered well in transition and defended the three-point shot well."

Vermont Tech improves to 3-3 and hosts Central Maine today at 3 p.m.



WOMEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Bates 70, Norwich 64

NORTHFIELD – Lauren Yanofsky scored a game-high 22 points and Allie Beaulieu netted 12 points as the Bates College women's basketball team defeated Norwich University, 70-64, in the Ed Hockenbury Classic championship game Saturday afternoon at Andrews Hall.

Norwich (5-2) was led by senior Jess Jaggars, who posted a double-double with a team-high 16 points and a career-best 16 rebounds. Junior Christine Daniels added a double-double of her own, posting 14 points and 10 boards.



Vermont 78, Manhattan 59

BURLINGTON – May Kotsopoulos scored a team-high 17 points and Courtnay Pilypaitis added a double-double to lead the Vermont Catamounts to a 78-59 victory over Manhattan in women's basketball action at Patrick Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

The Catamounts improve to 5-1 overall, 2-0 at home, while Manhattan falls to 3-4.



Southern Maine 70,

Vermont Technical College 56

RANDOLPH – The Southern Maine Community College women's basketball team was able to hold off Vermont Technical College 70-56 on Saturday.

Eliza Wakefield scored 16 points for the Green Knights, while teammates Dayna LeBlanc 17 points and Kelly Vellek totaled 15 points. Rachel Delcomp scored 17 points to lead SMCC.

Vermont Tech falls to 0-5 and hosts Central Maine today.



MEN'S COLLEGE HOCKEY

Middlebury 5,

University of New England 0

MIDDLEBURY – The Middlebury men's hockey team ended its first-semester schedule with a 5-0 win over the University of New England on Saturday.



Bowdoin 7, Castleton 1

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Daniel Weiniger paced the Polar Bears with three goals and Josh Harris had the lone goal for 1-2-1 Castleton as Bowdoin earned a 7-1 men's ice hockey win over Castleton on Saturday. Bowdoin improves to 4-0.



WOMEN'S COLLEGE HOCKEY

Maine 1, Vermont 0

ORONO, Maine – Jenna Ouellette scored with 12 minutes left in the game to give Maine a 1-0 victory over the University of Vermont women's hockey team in Hockey East action at Alfond Sports Arena on Saturday.

A Kailey Nash roughing penalty gave the Black Bears a power-play opportunity and that was all they needed to hand Vermont its fourth consecutive loss. Ouellette was able to tip a Lexie Hoffmeyer shot from the point past UVM senior goalie Kristen Olychuck for her seventh goal of the season.

Vermont struggled again on its power-play chances going 0-for-5 in the 1-0 loss. The Catamounts were 0-for-12 on the power play in the weekend-series against the Black Bears.

Olychuck made 25 saves in the losing effort while Brittany Ott made 22 saves to preserve the win.

The loss drops Vermont to 5-10-1 overall and 1-7-1 in Hockey East Action while Maine improves to 5-9-5 and 3-5-3 in Hockey East games.

Vermont returns to action when it travels to Dartmouth to take on the Big Green on Dec. 30 at 7 p.m. Dartmouth defeated the Catamounts 4-3 at Gutterson Fieldhouse last month.



Middlebury 6, Buffalo State 0

MIDDLEBURY – The Panthers scored four third-period goals and earned a 6-0 women's ice hockey win over Buffalo State on Saturday. The third-ranked Panthers wrap up their semester with a 5-0 mark and return to action when they host their own tournament on Jan. 3 and 4.

Madison Styrbicki had two goals for the Panthers and had an assist and Anna McNally had a goal and a pair of assists.

Becca Shaw earned her first career win in goal, making eight saves on the afternoon. Alyssa Koniar made 42 stops between the pipes for the Bengals.



Holy Cross 5, Castleton 0

WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior Jocelyn Kratchmer registered her first hat trick of the season to guide Holy Cross past Castleton 5-0 at Spartan Arena in Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) East action.

The Spartans fall to 2-7-1 overall and 2-5-1 in the ECAC East.

Holy Cross improved to 8-0-1 overall and 6-0-1 in the ECAC East.

jumped out ahead in the first period at the 7:16 mark on Kratchmer's fourth goal of the season and never looked back.

Castleton's Katharyn Dembowski made 22 saves on 26 shots while Amanda Hoy stopped 15 shots. Crusaders' Monique Gallant stopped seven shots to earn her third shutout of the season.

Castleton returns to action on Dec. 12 at 3 p.m. when the Spartans host Saint Michael's.
