Colby-Sawyer tops Norwich; UVM beats St. Lawrence

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team held off a furious comeback attempt from Norwich to earn an 85-83 victory on Saturday.
The first five minutes of the game featured a pair of ties and six lead changes. The Cadets held an early 9-8 lead, but that was the last time they held an advantage. The Chargers pulled away over the next five minutes after making three straight 3-pointers. Colby-Sawyer finished the stretch on an 18-2 run and led 26-11 with less than 10 minutes to play in the first half.
Colby-Sawyer was leading comfortably for the first 10 minutes of the second frame, but the Cadets started to mount a comeback bid. Norwich steadily chipped away at the lead and closed the gap to two points when junior Jaren Jeffcoat connected on a jumper with four minutes to play.
The teams traded baskets over the following minutes before the Cadets were forced to start fouling to stop the clock. Colby-Sawyer freshman Corey Willis was up to the task, knocking down several free throws in the waning seconds. Willis finished with a team-high 17 points and made 11 of 12 free throws.
The Chargers also received a strong performance from freshman Jason Chevrefils, who racked up 16 points and eight rebounds. Senior Dave Rosso of Wilmington had 15 points, while sophomore Will Bardaglio contributed 10 points. Spaulding graduates Jon Chaloux and Chrispatrick Cox recorded nine and seven points, respectively.
Norwich sophomore Antonio Davis led all scorers with 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Jeffcoat, who leads the Cadets in scoring, had 19 points. Freshman Ryan Williams and junior Quincy Williams added 13 points each. Freshman guard Nickolai Havoutis was held scoreless, but he dished out 12 assists.
The Chargers improve to 5-2 overall, while Norwich drops to 5-3. The Cadets will host Skidmore on Jan. 6.

BASKETBALL
Vermont Tech 81, Unity 30
UNITY, Maine – Four players reached double figures as the Vermont Technical College men's basketball team rolled to Saturday's 81-30 victory over Unity.
Kevin Carr had 16 points and 11 steals to lead the Green Knights, with teammate Linden Smith-Hyde putting up 14 points. Eko N'eouke had a double-double (11 points, 11 rebounds) and Julian Miller finished with 10 points for VTC, which raises its record to 5-4 overall and 5-2 in the Yankee Small College Athletic Conference.
James Envenute had nine points for Unity (0-9, 0-6).
MEN'S COLLEGE HOCKEY
Vermont 3, St. Lawrence 0
BURLINGTON – Vermont defeated St. Lawrence 3-0 in front of a sellout crowd at Gutterson Fieldhouse on Saturday night. Sophomore Rob Madore made 21 saves to earn his second career shutout. Brian Roloff scored a pair of power-play goals and Josh Burrows also scored for the Catamounts, who improved to 8-7-2.
WOMEN'S COLLEGE HOCKEY
Castleton 5, St. Michael's 3
RUTLAND – Freshman Abbey Hewes factored into four of five Castleton power-play goals in Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference East action on National Guard Appreciation Day at Spartan Arena in Rutland.
Hewes scored twice and added two assists to propel the Spartans to 3-7-1 overall (3-5-1 ECAC East).
Just 36 seconds into the contest, Saint Michael's (1-9-0 overall, 1-9-0 ECAC East) was assessed a penalty for tripping and Castleton took advantage.
Freshman Nicole Ruman slammed home her first collegiate goal at 1:21 off of a Hewes' rebound in the crease past Purple Knights' goalie Alysia Goldman for an early lead.
Laura Szwed pushed the Spartans ahead, 2-0, with her team-leading fifth goal of the season at 11:48. Camped out in front of the net, Szwed redirected a wrist shot from Hewes taken from just inside the right face-off circle over Goldman's glove.
Saint Michael's sliced the lead in half early in the second period thanks to Crystal Sarno. On the man-advantage, Desiree Biron zipped a pass to Sarno near the left post and Sarno finished for her fifth of the season at 2:51.
Castleton responded with three-consecutive power-play goals, including two from Hewes. At 6:56, Hewes stuffed home a point-blank rebound in the crease from Ruman for a 3-1 advantage. A few minutes later (9:17), Hewes blasted home another rebound at the doorstep, extending the gap to 4-1.
Meagan Hulbert added cushion room at 13:50 with her second goal of the season (second on the power-play).
Late in the third period, the Purple Knights cut into the deficit scoring twice to cut the deficit to 5-3.
Meghan Sweezey scored top shelf over Castleton goaltender Amanda Hoy after the puck came free from a scramble in front of the net at 16:53 on the power play, making it 5-2.
With their goaltender pulled, Biron banged home a slapshot at 19:02 from the high slot past Hoy.
Hoy made 25 saves, while Goldberg stopped 16 shots. Erin Stevens made five saves.
Castleton will return to action on Jan. 6 at Manhattanville.
