Royals topple Proctor

In Ludlow, Logan Russell had 15 points and South Royalton pulled away from Proctor for a 36-24 victory in the CVL/MVL Challenge on Wednesday night.

Megan Carter led Proctor with eight points, helping to pick up the slack when Proctor's best scoring threat, Mikalya Tanner, went down with a bad ankle injury in the second period with the game close. Proctor led at halftime, 13-12.

"The girls really picked it up," Proctor co-coach Lisa Hughes said. "We were proud of them."

Carissa Elrick added six points for 2-3 Proctor, which will visit West Rutland on Monday. Megan Whitcomb had eight points for South Royalton.



Rochester 62, Black River 17

In Ludlow, Miranda Shepard and Madison Fuller had 12 points apiece in the second round of the CVL/MVL Challenge. The Rockets built on a 22-4 halftime lead to improve their record to 4-2.

Angie Valente and Katlyn Palmer both scored six points for the Presidents.

Black River plays at home on Monday against Leland & Gray.

ROCK CLIMBING

Mill River wins

Jake Chila of Mill River was named top male climber with 354 points and helped his school earn top spot in the second junior and senior high school rock climbing competition at Green Mountain Rock Climbing Center in Rutland on Wednesday.

Five schools climbed but Mill River racked up 1,664 points, earning first place in the senior high school group, and narrowly beating Rutland's 1,613 climbing points. Stephanie Ramirez of Rutland was the top female climber, earning 350 points. Otter Valley took third place with 1,405 points, and Proctor and Long Trail tied for fourth with 1,100 points.

The next competition will be held on Jan. 13.



GIRLS HOCKEY

CVU 10, Burr and Burton 2

In Manchester, the Redhawks remained unbeaten as Molly Howard scored four times and assisted on two goals at Riley Rink. Nicole Sisk had 11 saves for the 4-0 victors.

Hannah Corkum and Jessica Dorr had goals for 1-3 BBA, which got 37 saves from Meg Chandler.

Sylvia Steinhoff chipped in a hat trick and an assist and Kay Logan had two goals and two assists for CVU.



Harwood 10, MSJ 2

In Waterbury, nine different players scored for Harwood in the Highlanders' win over MSJ.

Colleen Shouldice scored both goals for the Mounties and teammate Katlyn Robertello made 23 saves.

Caroline Gilbert scored twice for Harwood. Emma Cummings, Morgan Lamson, Sarah Moore, Meghan Burrows, Nina Yandow, Haley Spittle, Carly Taylor and Desirae Kerins scored for Harwood. Kaitlin Daley made 10 saves.

Harwood (2-3) plays at Rutland on Saturday.



Middlebury 4, Brattleboro 3

In Brattleboro, Emmy Hescock notched a hat trick but the Tigers needed Sara Boudah's goal with 6:29 to go to pull out the victory.

Maddie Rollins scored twice for the 1-3 Colonels and Naomi Kramer added the other goal.

Ashley Howlett stopped 16 shots for the win while Bri Snow stopped nine for Brattleboro.
