The Mount St. Joseph boys hockey team is short on players but big on heart. Playing with just eight skaters Tuesday at Spartan Arena, the Mounties gave Lyndon all it wanted before bowing 7-5 in a game that featured 85 shots on goal.

The Vikings jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 1:16 after Seth Conway's apparent goal in the first 20 seconds for MSJ was disallowed. Matt Messier netted the first of his three goals at 4:42 of the first period to cut the lead in half, but Dan Ott's second goal made it 3-1 at the first intermission.

The Mounties roared back with three unanswered in the second period, with Messier, Casey Gravelle and Seth Conway finding the net. But Taylor Swartz, who finished with four goals, scored two in a 1:22 span to send the Vikings to the second break up 5-4.

Brannon LaCourse made it 6-4 at 5:47 and Swartz finished the Lyndon scoring at 8:01 but Messier completed his hat trick at 9:52 to put the Mounties within striking distance, but they could get no closer.

Freshman Seth LaChance stopped 37 shots for the 0-4 Mounties while Kieran Steward made 36 saves for 2-4 Lyndon.

"I was very pleased with the effort. We left it all out on the ice," MSJ coach Dale Patterson said. "Seth played great and so did Casey Gravelle. And Matt Messier showed me a ton of heart. He went all-out the entire game."

Messier and Makana Burke had two assists for MSJ, while Gravelle, Greg Ricketts and Dan Pearson had one each.
