WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Police arrested a Rutland man as he left court Monday for allegedly robbing a Ludlow convenience store at gunpoint.

Glen Perry, 26, pleaded innocent Tuesday in White River Junction District Court to a felony charge of assault and robbery, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

According to an affidavit filed with the court, around 2:30 a.m. Aug. 31, a man entered the Cumberland Farms convenience store on Main Street in Ludlow, pointed a gun at the clerk and demanded money. The man made off with $572 and a pack of cigarettes, police said. Nobody was injured.

Days later, the clerk repeatedly identified Perry as the robber from a series of photo lineups, affidavits state. Months later, police learned Perry was scheduled to be arraigned Monday morning in Rutland District Court on a charge of driving with a suspended license and police arrested him as he left court, records state.

Perry was held in Springfield prison on $10,000 bail until his arraignment on Tuesday, when Windsor County State's Attorney Robert Sand asked Judge Theresa DiMauro to continue bail at the same amount.

Sand noted Perry's criminal history, which includes five felony convictions — two for escape — and said Perry was a risk for flight or nonappearance in court. Perry's attorney Elizabeth Kruska recounted Perry's ties to the community — born in Rutland, attended Mill River Union High School and currently resides with his father in Rutland — and said Perry's family could only come up with $500, half the amount needed for a $10,000 bond.

In the end, DiMauro sided with Sand.

"At the age of 26, Mr. Perry has a record that is not insignificant," she said.

Perry remains in custody in Springfield prison. He scheduled to return to court Feb. 23.

I love it. Our courts are such a joke. Bail is set at $10,000 which means that he can be released if he comes up with $1,000.

What a winner. Probably didn't have a chance, even before he was born. Armed robbery already? Sounds like he'll have it better off than the people of Haiti, which quite frankly isn't very fair. There has to be something we can do to prevent this kind of thing, oh yeah, there is - it's called birth control.
