In Fair Haven, points were hard to come by as the Slaters outlasted Mill River 33-15 in a Marble Valley League girls basketball game.

Fair Haven will be home for the playoffs, at least to start, as the Slaters boast a 13-6 record with one game remaining, a Friday night contest at Otter Valley.

Senior Caleigh Jones had a big performance on senior night with seven points and 10 rebounds. Devyn Reed also added seven points for the Slaters.

Alyssa Turgeon led the Minutemen with six points.

Emily McIntyre and Valerie Sawin were the other seniors honored for the Slaters.

"We talked about communicating on defense. When we communicate on defense, it really brings up our energy level and we really played hard," Fair Haven coach Kyle Wilson said.

Burr and Burton 69,

Mount Anthony 39

In Manchester, the Bulldogs led all the way but put the hammer down in the fourth period to gain their seventh consecutive victory.

The Bulldogs outscored the Patriots 21-9 in the final session to salt away the win.

Logan Cavanaugh showed the way for BBA with 15 points, with Kelsey Kelleher added 14 and Jenna Hoffman 13.

Courtney Hewitt led MAU with 15 and Abby Iannotti added 11.

"We started to play in the second half and played really well in the fourth quarter," BBA coach Jeff Houghton said. "But MAU plays hard and Leo (Reynolds) has those kids working."

The Bulldogs improved to 17-2 and take on Rutland, which pinned the last loss on BBA, Friday in Rutland.

Arlington 73, Black River 32

In Arlington, fittingly senior guard Katherine Macksey led all scorers with 18 points on senior night as the Eagles soared to their 16th victory of the season.

The Eagles led wire-to-wire, with Haley VanOrman (16 points) and Maggie Belnap (11) joining Macksey as a double-digit scorer. The Eagles improved to 16-3 and travel to Mount St. Joseph Academy Friday to wrap up their season.

Amanda Chambers paced the Presidents with 10 points.

Leland & Gray 54, MSJ 26

Alex Morrow scored 19 points and Ali Marcucci another 14 to power Leland & Gray past Mount St. Joseph Academy.

Ashley Bathalon had seven points and Brianna Patten six to lead 3-16 MSJ.

Twin Valley 55, Proctor 34

In Proctor, the Wildcats continued their strong season, hiking their record to 16-3 at the expense of the Phantoms.

Sam Bernard led Twin Valley with 21 points and Devin Spirka tossed in 13.

Mikayla Tanner had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds for the 7-13 Phantoms.

The Phantoms have completed their season and will be on the road in the first round of the Division IV playoffs.

"It will be against one of the top five teams," Proctor coach Chris Hughes said.

Twin Valley completes its season Friday at Black River.

So. Royalton 55, BMU 49

In South Royalton, the Royals led by only a point going into the fourth quarter but kept the lead the rest of the way, hiking their record to 16-2. They have games remaining against Whitcomb and Hazen.

Megan Whitcomb had a season-high 26 points to fuel the victory and Emma Jozefiak helped out with 11. Logan Russell added nine.

Amy Thompson led Blue Mountain with 20 and Natalie Page followed with 16.

Chelsea 48, Rochester 39

In Chelsea, Whitney Ladd poured in 20 points and Courtney Sanford added 18 as the Red Devils went to 11-5. Daley Crowley had 14 and Madison Fuller 12 for 8-10 Rochester.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Fair Haven 68, Bellows Falls 33

In Bellows Falls Monday night, the Slaters had four players score in double figures.

Alex Breslen tossed in 12 points, Evan Amery and Robert Coloutti each had 11, and Christian Doran had 10 points and 15 rebounds for the 14-3 Slaters.

Fair Haven led at the half, 31-13.

"We jumped out 17-4 in the first quarter and it was over with," Fair Haven coach Bob Prenevost said.

The Slaters host Woodstock tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.

NORDIC SKIING

Marble Valley League Relays

In Woodstock, a crash at the finish line in the boys race vaulted host Woodstock to victory and prevented a sweep of both the boys and girls races by Mount Anthony in the Marble Valley relay race.

It looked as if MAU's Brian Vargo was going to nip James Bassette at the finish line, but something happened and he crashed with Bassette, and Bassette moved past Vargo to claim victory for his team the Nordic skiing event.

The race was held on a 1.25K course, with each team represented by four racers.

Bassette anchored the winning Wasps team of John Bassette, Jordan Fields and Jeff Tucker that finished in a time of 18:05. The MAU team of Michael Smith, Jeff Thibodeau, Jacob Reisler and Vargo came in second at 18:10, while the Burr and Burton team of George Forbes, Tucker Foulkes, Matt Lareu and Sylan McBair finished third with a time of 19:58.

The Rutland squad of Andrew Laird, Zach Kraszner, Ed Ingerman and Wes Henderson was fifth in 20:25.

In the girls race, the Mount Anthony team of Kristen Cara, Charlotte Malmborg, Anya Eclhardt and Elise Seyforth won the race with a time of 20:52. Brattleboro's team of Brigit Shea-Gande, Linnea Jahn, Maddy Conley and Halie Lange took second with a time of 21:23

Rutland's team of Grace Wright, Katie Reuther, Melissa Gfeller and Mary Kate Cirelli finished third at 21:55.

The MVL standings on the boys side have MAU, Woodstock and Brattleboro as the top three, while on the girls side, it's MAU, Brattleboro and Rutland in the three top spots. The MVL standings combine freestyle, classical and relay results.

MEN'S HOCKEY

Middlebury 4, Williams 2

In Williamstown, Mass., John Sullivan and Ken Suchoski scored two goals each as the Panthers overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Ephs. Williams, which was coming off a 2-1 win over No. 2 Norwich, jumped out in the first period on goals by Mike Brofft and Brian Malchoff.

Sullivan cut the deficit in half at 6:40 of the second and Suchoski knotted it 58 seconds later. He then put Middlebury ahead to stay with a power-play goal at 11:13 before Sullivan added an empty-netter in the final seconds.

John Yanchek made 32 saves for the 12-4-4 Panthers while Ryan Purdy stopped 38 shots for 12-4-3 Williams.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Castleton 72, GMC 62

In Castleton, Castleton State College shot better than 50 percent from the field and knocked in 7-of-12 from 3-point distance, en route to a North Atlantic Conference win over Green Mountain College at Glenbrook Gymnasium.

Jared Paul led the Spartans with a team-high 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Mark Comstock added 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while Mike Knight added a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Kevin Eisenberg and Malcolm Still, Jr. chipped in nine and eight, respectively, off the Spartans bench.

Rui Carmo scored a game-high 27 points on 11-of-15 shooting and hauled in 13 rebounds to pace Green Mountain offense. Trent Morgan added 16 points and six steals for the 6-13, 3-7 Eagles.

SKIING

Castleton sweeps again

In North Conway, N.H., the Castleton State College men's and women's ski teams picked up two more slalom wins to cap the 2010 ECSC Thompson Division regular season this past weekend at Cranmore Mountain Resort.

Michelle Podnecky of Woodstock took top honors in Saturday's slalom, while Brianna Kullberg won Sunday's slalom. Podnecky's time of 1:44.15 earned her the win, while teammate Kristina Sundin was second at 1:46.74. Heather Patterson picked up the bronze at 1:48.88 to complete the team scoring for the Spartans.

Kullberg was 10th after the morning leg of the event, but posted the fastest second run of the day to move up to fourth. Erica Luce placed fifth out of 76 racers to give the Spartans the top five spots on the day.

On Sunday, Castleton placed six skiers in the top six and sealed their second consecutive undefeated regular season. Kullberg won her second race of the year with a time of 1:44.19. Podnecky finished second in the day's slalom event at 1:47.46. Katie Martin earned her first podium result of the season, in third at 1:52.41. Luce, Patterson, and Corrie Keener rounded out the top-six in the race.

In the men's races, freshman Steven Zotter claimed his second victory of the season with a two-run time of 1:33.91. Castleton's Bartholomew Kallgren earned his first career podium with a time of 1:39.61, while Mendon's Charles Robbins completed the team scoring in fourth at 1:43.16. Bobby Jones and Justin Garritt placed fifth and sixth out of 101 racers for the Spartans.

On Sunday, Zotter led the Spartans with a third-place result out of 94 racers. Zotter completed the course with a time of 1:37.29. Northeastern's Robert Visconti, a product of Killington Mountain School, clocked the fastest time of the day at 1:29.02. Zotter was followed by teammates Gregory Towle, Connor O'Brien, Jones, Garritt, and Kallgren, who placed fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth, respectively.

It is the fifth consecutive ECSC division title for Castleton and their first undefeated season since 2007.
