Slattery steps down from city board

Alderwoman Joanne Slattery resigned from the Board of Aldermen over the weekend, citing personal reasons for her decision in an e-mail to the mayor and board president.

Mayor Christopher Louras and Board President David Allaire both confirmed Monday that they received Slattery's immediate resignation on Saturday.

Slattery could not be reached for comment on Monday afternoon.

"Unfortunately, Joanne for very personal reasons has found it necessary to resign from the board effective immediately," Louras said.

Allaire said that Slattery asked in the e-mail that the reasons behind her decision be kept private.

"We're going to miss her on the board," he said. "She was always very diligent about attending meetings. When she did speak she was always right on the money. I think she served her constituents very well."

Most recently, Slattery was one of three aldermen who represented the city in a two-day stretch of negotiations to settle the three-year-old lawsuit over the faulty water treatment plant roof. As a retired para-educator with the city and union representative, Slattery said then that she had experience with those types of negotiations.

Slattery just completed her third year on the board, having first been elected in 2007 and returned to her seat last year as the third-highest vote-getter in a field of nine candidates. Aside from a brief leave of absence late last year, Slattery served as chairwoman for the Public Works Committee since March 2009.

Her resignation means Louras must now nominate a successor to the board.

Asked about the process Monday, Louras said he would like to have a name to submit to the aldermen for consideration at their next meeting on Monday, but it will also be a "deliberative process."
