BENNINGTON – A South Street man is being held without bail after police said he cut another man's hand with a knife on Saturday in the parking lot of a bank in North Bennington.
Roberto B. Diaz, 28, of Bennington, was arraigned in Bennington District Court on Monday of felony charges of aggravated assault with a weapon and obstructing justice and a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct.
In an affidavit, Bennington Police Cpl. Christopher Lauzon said police were dispatched to Diaz's South Street apartment around 2 p.m. Saturday because of a report that a 26-year-old man might be attempting to break into the apartment.
The man was not in the area when police arrived, but Lauzon said about 45 minutes later, he got a call from the man's girlfriend. The woman said Diaz had attacked the man and threatened her in a bank parking lot.
Lauzon said the man told him that Diaz had accused him of trying to break into Diaz's apartment and cut his right hand with a 3-inch knife.
Two women gave written statements to police that said they saw the incident with Diaz and the couple in the bank parking lot. Both said Diaz told them that he knew them and that they should not tell anyone about what they had seen.
Lauzon said he arrested Diaz on March 6. According to Lauzon, Diaz denied attacking the man with a knife.
Diaz was ordered held without bail because he was charged with a crime of violence, according to Bennington County State's Attorney Erica Marthage.
If Diaz is convicted of the charges against him, he could be sentenced to more than 20 years in prison.2 CommentsMORE IN This Just InThe Middletown Springs Memorial Day Parade is on Sunday. Full Story -
