NEWPORT — A Vermont man whose toddler ingested methadone has been given a suspended jail term.

Thirty-four-year-old Nathaniel Stahl, of Marshfield, was sentenced Wednesday to 6 to 12 months in jail — all suspended — and ordered to serve 30 days on furlough and community service.

He pleaded no contest to child endangerment.

Stahl and his wife took their 13-month-old son to the hospital on three occasions in April, the last time with him listless, pale and not breathing.

A test showed methadone in his system, which police believe had either been fed to him or left around the house and accidentally eaten.

Kami Stahl, 24, pleaded guilty previously to reckless endangerment.
