Nineteen people survive the Pittsfield Death RaceJune 29,2010
One of the world's fittest men finished first and a cancer survivor finished last.
But according to Pittsfield's Joe Desena, just finishing meant you won his Death Race, tagged one of the toughest endurance races in the world.
Out of the 135 people who signed up for the race, which began on Desena's Amee Farm Friday night and continued for more than 24 hours, only 19 finished.
And, only 80 of the more than hundred registrants ended up starting the race after Desena and partner Andy Weinberg took the racers on a tour of the mountain before the race even began.
The top 10 finishers of the more than 24-hour race include: Joe Decker of California with a time of 28 hours, 5 minutes, Reeder Fahnestock with a time of 29 hours and 47 minutes, David Romilly with a time of 30 hours, 47 minutes, Cully Cavness with a time of 30 hours, 15 minutes, Robert Niles with a time of 32 hours, 57 minutes, Jostein Alvestad with a time of 33 hours, 35 minutes who tied with Stefanie Bishop with the same time, Jack Cary with a time of 35 hours, 20 minutes , Lisa Madden with a time of 35 hours, 23 minutes and Bryan Selm with a time of 35 hours and 26 minutes.
The race started at 8 p.m. Friday and Decker finished early Sunday morning, three hours earlier than race organizers expected, Desena said.
The point of the Death Race is to bring people back to survival mode - seeking only food, water and shelter to survive.
