Burglaries aren’t uncommon in Rutland, but a series of daylight break-ins prompted city police to issue a second warning on Tuesday.
For the better part of a month, city police have been tracking burglaries committed while homeowners are at work or away on vacation.
“We had two more in the northeast today,” community policing coordinator Tim Tuttle said, referring to the city’s northeast neighborhood.
“They’re climbing through windows, removing air conditioners to get in. We had one in the northeast where they threw patio furniture through a window. Believe it or not, in some cases people just leave their doors unlocked and they walk in.”
Tuttle said the thieves are making off with whatever they can carry.
While the northeast neighborhood was victimized on Tuesday, the majority of break-ins and thefts in homes and vehicles during the past month have taken place in the city’s northwest neighborhood.
To safeguard property, Tuttle said, residents should lock up when they’re not at home and report any suspicious activity in their neighborhood to city police who can be reached by calling 773-1820 or online at www.rutlandcity.com. City police also have a tip line at 773-1842.
Tuttle said residents can also call him at 770-5365 for information about ways to improve home security.
