Two killed, five injured in Bridgewater crashBy Lucia Suarez
Staff Writer | January 15,2012BRIDGEWATER — A two-vehicle crash on Route 4 killed a man and his son and sent five other people to the hospital Sunday afternoon, according to Vermont State Police.
Christopher Raleigh, 56, of Las Vegas, Nev., along with his 10-year-old son Travis, were both pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Other family members in the vehicle included Anastasia Raleigh, 47, Travis's mother and Christopher's wife, as well as the couple's 13-year-old son, police said. They were all taken to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., for treatment.
Anastasia Raleigh was in critical condition with severe head and internal injuries, according to police. The 13-year-old was listed in good condition and the 6-month-old escaped injuries, police said.
Also injured were the occupants of the other vehicle involved in the crash, Joshua Ouimette, 25, and Stephanie Hill, 28, both of Rutland. Police said they were taken to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center with “severe but non-life-threatening” injuries. A 6-month-old child was in the car with the Rutland couple, but uninjured.
The crash took place around 12:20 p.m. on a two-lane, straight section of Route 4 in front of Blanche and Bill's Pancake House.
Police said an initial investigation showed Ouimette was driving a 2004 GMC Envoy on Route 4 and crossed over the center line, hitting head-on a 2001 Ford Escape driven by Christopher Raleigh.
The crash left the smashed Envoy facing east in the roadway. The Escape was a few feet off the road and flipped on its side.
Police said everyone involved in the crash had been wearing seat belts, except Christopher and Anastasia Raleigh.
The road conditions were dry and clear at the time of the crash, police said.
The crash closed Route 4 for about five hours and traffic was diverted to Route 100 while emergency personnel worked through the single-digit temperatures at the scene.
Several state police troopers, local and county police officers and more than two dozen emergency and fire personnel responded to the crash. Two helicopters from Darthmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center also were flown to the scene.
The Vermont State Police Crash Reconstruction Team was on the scene to reconstruct the crash.
Vermont State Police, Woodstock Fire Department, Windsor County Sheriff's Department, Rutland Regional Ambulance, Killington Fire Department and Bridgewater Fire Department assisted in the investigation.
