BENNINGTON – Voters will be asked to support one new agency on Bennington’s town meeting ballot in March.
Local radio station WBTN 1370-AM will be on the ballot for $10,000 according to Cassandra Barbeau, Bennington’s assistant town clerk.
WBTN is a nonprofit radio station located in Bennington which describes it mission as being “the voice of the greater Bennington Community and surrounding areas” and serving as “the ‘buzz’ of Bennington” by providing information about local events.
According to Barbeau, three other organizations submitted petitions but none had enough signatures to earn a place at the ballot.
Oldcastle Theatre Company fell short by only about 50 of the 457 signatures from registered Bennington voters needed to earn a spot and the Wallomsac Farmer’s Market submitted 390 signatures. The Park-McCullough House in North Bennington also submitted a petition but had only about a quarter of what would have been needed.
None of the agencies that have been on past ballots, including the Bennington Coalition for the Homeless and the Center for Restorative Justice, withdrew their requests this year so voters will be asked about all the agencies that requested funding in 2011 and WBTN.
In Bennington, votes are taken on agency appropriations by Australian ballot on Town Meeting Day. Some towns vote on appropriations during their floor meeting.
While the deadline for petitions for agency requests was on Thursday, candidates for office have until Monday at 5 p.m. to turn in their petitions.2 CommentsMORE IN This Just InEAST MONTPELIER — A Vermont high school student has been accused of making two bomb threats at...
