John W. McGurk III
John W. McGurk III
SHREWSBURY — John William McGurk III, eldest son of John W. II and Kathleen (Meade) McGurk, died June 19, 2012, of liver cancer. He died at his home in Shrewsbury with his wife Pamela by his side and in the presence of his animal friends Mia, Grayson, and Berrigan. Many friends and neighbors came to visit him in his last days, sharing music, food, laughter, and sunshine. They all brought love and helped in any way they could.
John was born December 12, 1946. He spent his working life working with tile and stone. He was universally acknowledged as an awesome cook. He loved to be in His Kitchen, cooking for people, and was hard put to make a meal for only two. Skiing was a passion and brought him great joy.
John had a unique artistic sensibility and could quickly create what was simple and elegant in tile, wood, or stone. His sometimes bristly surface masked a heart both sensitive and kind to all living creatures. A highlight of his life was planting a kiss on a baby whale that surfaced near him in the waters off Baja, CA.
John was always passionately anti-war. He also felt strongly about the desecration of our Mother Earth that is built into our culture of consumption and our reliance on technologies that pollute or destroy habitat. He would like everyone to consider the nuclear waste stored on the banks of the Connecticut River as a ticking time bomb.
John leaves behind his wife and partner for 33 years, Pamela Darrow; his beloved son Ivan and wife Lindsay of Truckee, CA; two sisters, Mary Wendell of Bradford, VT, and Helen McGurk of Winchester, CT; three brothers — Christopher of Winstead, CT, Francis of Torrington, and Kevin of Sandwich, MA — as well as numerous nephews and nieces and their beautiful children.
A memorial service will be held in early September.
