Storm floods Burlington facility for homeless
BURLINGTON — A day station for the homeless in the Vermont city of Burlington will be closed for at least a month because of flooding.
A thunderstorm ripped through Burlington last week, sending rain water downhill to collect at the Committee on Temporary Shelter’s facility at the corner of South Winooski Avenue and King Street.
The water reached up to three feet outside the building and rushed inside, damaging rooms and paperwork.
The day station provides homeless residents with access to resources, such as a place to search for housing, job groups, or health and nutrition classes.
Executive Director Rita Markley said about 50 to 60 people walk into the Day Station daily to eat lunch, pick up mail and use the computers and phones.
