NEWPORT — A 29-year-old Vermont man is going to prison for 3 ½ years for wielding a machete, a pistol and a knife in an alcohol-fueled night of violence.

Dwayne Calloway Jr., of Newport, pleaded guilty last week to aggravated domestic assault and unlawful mischief as part of a plea agreement.

Police said Calloway last August threatened his mother with a machete and later with a knife before attempting to fire a handgun, which wasn’t loaded.

According to the Caledonian Record, Calloway told police he had consumed a fifth of whiskey, a fifth of rum, six or seven beers and numerous painkillers before going on a rampage.
