A Rutland Town man who entered the city’s police department wielding a broom, appeared in Rutland criminal court Monday to answer to five charges related to the incident.

Rutland Police say that Levi J. Davis, 28, entered the department’s lobby at 108 Wales St. at about 3:19 a.m. Saturday where he allegedly argued with police and a 26-year-old man who police say was the owner of a vehicle that Davis allegedly ran into outside a bar on Merchants Row, according to a police affidavit written by patrolman Ted Washburn.

Davis was arrested inside the department on a charge of disorderly conduct — which included his alleged refusal to drop the broom, Washburn wrote.

While being placed in a holding cell, Davis allegedly began “thrashing and kicking” at officers as well as making threats that he would kill the officers and their families, Washburn said.

Davis pleaded innocent to misdemeanor charges of unlawful mischief, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, driving with a suspended license and careless or negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

He was freed on court ordered conditions of release which include daily reporting to the Rutland County Sheriff’s Department and a prohibition against possessing or consuming alcohol.
