BURLINGTON — A Vermont couple missing for more than a year were abducted from their home and murdered and a suspect is in custody in another state, federal authorities said Friday.
Bill and Lorraine Currier of Essex were last seen when they left their Burlington jobs on June 8, 2011. Investigators determined that the Curriers home had been entered forcibly, and there was evidence of a possible struggle.
“The investigation has developed significant information that William and Lorraine Currier were abducted from their home and murdered shortly thereafter in June 2011,” said Tristan Coffin, U.S. attorney for Vermont. “The person believed to have committed the murders is in custody in another state and will remain in custody. No charges have yet been brought against this person for the Curriers murders but charges are anticipated.”
The suspect's name has not been released.
The crime was a random act, authorities said.
“There was nothing the Curriers did in their personal lives that contributed to their deaths,” said Chittenden County State's Attorney T.J. Donovan. To our knowledge there's no prior connection between the Curriers and the individual in custody.”
The FBI had been searching a landfill in Coventry for the Curriers' remains this summer but did not find them, the FBI said Friday.
