BENNINGTON — A car reported stolen on Tuesday from a Bennington home was damaged a few hours later after it crashed during a police chase in Rensselaer County, N.Y., on Wednesday, according to Lt. Lloyd Dean of the Bennington Police Department.
Dean said Scott Morey, 30, of Bennington, was arrested after the crash.
According to Dean, a 1994 white Honda Civic was reported stolen around 10:50 p.m. Tuesday by a woman who said it was taken while outside a home on George Street in North Bennington.
The woman told police she left the car unlocked with the keys in it.
Around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, Bennington police were contacted by the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Department reporting that the car had been part of a pursuit that began in Hoosick, N.Y.
After it crashed, Morey, who police said was driving the car, was taken into custody and held without bail at Rensselaer County jail as a fugitive from justice in Vermont and other charges filed by New York authorities.
Dean said Morey was wanted in Vermont because he was accused of escaping from furlough on July 19.
Dean said the incident should be a reminder to people to lock their vehicles and remove any valuables that are inside.
