Elizabeth J. West

MENDON — Elizabeth J. West, 78, died Wednesday, July 25, 2012, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

She was born May 12, 1934, in Springfield, Ill., the daughter of Harry and Elizabeth (Malone) West.

She graduated from St. James Catholic School in Florida and received her bachelor’s degree from St. Mary College in Kansas.

In Orlando, Fla., she married and raised her two daughters while obtaining her master’s degree at Rollins College and then taught math and science at Howard Junior High School. In 1981, she began teaching on a U.S. Army base in Bad Kreuznach, Germany. She retired in 1998.

She enjoyed worldwide travel, reading, gardening and activities at her Mendon condo where she was on the board of directors.

Survivors include her children, Elizabeth Matlaga of Deerfield Beach, Fla., and Catherine Wilkerson of Orlando, Fla., and a grandson.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, July 28, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Rutland, with the Rev. Remigius Ntahondi, pastor, as celebrant.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Ducharme Funeral Home in Castleton.
