Girls seek help mailing to troops
August 11,2012
NEW HAVEN — A motivated group of girls is asking the public’s help to create more cards than ever for military personnel in service or in recovery.
In the middle of a hayfield this past week, the population skyrocketed from zero to 10,000 at the Addison County Fair & Field Days and today, on the last day of the week-long fair, the girls hope to harness some of those visitors to help make and send off thankful and caring cards to 2,012 servicemen and women.
The girls belong to a 4H group called the Cornwall Musketeers and Girl Scout troops from Addison and Rutland counties.
They are filling baskets with homemade cards and notes to send to soldiers stationed around the globe, as well as those currently in rehabilitation centers in the U.S.
The cards are shipped out through a group called Soldiers Angels. Last year, the group shipped out 1,015 cards to soldiers around the world.
This year, the goal is 2,012.
The fair runs until 9 p.m. today night and the girls can be found making cards in the 4H building.
