Guilty plea in Rodeway incident
August 22,2012
A Rutland man who police say on Monday barricaded himself in a motel room and threatened officers who tried to evict him pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge from the incident on Tuesday.
Robert P. Shaw, 54, was sentenced to two days in jail and a $50 fine during a brief hearing in Rutland criminal court.
Shaw, who pleaded to a charge of unlawful trespass, was ousted from the Rodeway Inn on North Main Street on Monday by city police officers who used pepper spray and a battering ram to force their way into his room.
No one was hurt in the incident, which began when the inn’s owners asked police to evict Shaw for failing to keep up payments on the room he had rented for a week.
When officers knocked on the door, Shaw allegedly told them that he had a gun and would use it on anyone who entered the room.
No firearm was found on Shaw or in the room, police said.
