“We’ve got pretty much everything taken care of,” says Rockingham’s Municipal Manager Timothy Cullenen. “We have been working and we are continuing to work on a couple of projects. We had our fair share of road washouts, culvert damage and things like that, and those, for all intents and purposes, have been addressed.”

One high-profile project still in the works in Rockingham is the reconstruction of the famous, covered Bartonsville Bridge — the total loss of which was caught on video and featured on CNN and Good Morning America. Cullenen says construction should be started by September, and, hopefully, finished by January 2013. Two other covered, wooden bridges were damaged in addition to the Bartonsville Bridge, as well as nine or 10 of the town’s roads.

“Our highway crew did an amazing job getting everything back,” Cullenen says.

Of the six homes that sustained damaged, three were completely destroyed and are awaiting approval for the buyout program, but that process is going very slowly, according to Cullenen, the families have relocated. Three homes were repaired and are now occupied.

Cullenen says there are two events planned for Rockingham, both of which will take place at the Bartonsville Bridge site — the first is the governor’s visit on Aug. 25 and the second event will be on Aug. 28 to commemorate the actual day of the flood.
