STOWE — Firefighters continued Tuesday to battle a fire in steep terrain on Mount Mansfield in Stowe.

The fire started early Monday after winds fueled embers from a campfire above the Long Trail’s Taylor Lodge. The embers ignited dry moss and about two acres of land.

Firefighters from about eight departments were working to put out the fire Tuesday.

Stowe Fire Department Capt. Kyle Walker said firefighters hiked in with at least 40 pounds of water on their backs, plus hand tools and other equipment. He said the moss is thick and the fire was burning underneath.

The steep terrain was making it tough to extinguish the blaze.
