Staff Report | September 10,2012
BENNINGTON - A Sunderland woman was arraigned today for two separate incidents, one involving an allegation that she stole a six-pack of beer from a Bennington store on Aug. 11 by hiding it in a diaper bag.
Adrienne Bowen, 22, of Sunderland, was arraigned on a felony charge of forgery in the first case and a misdemeanor charge of retail theft in the second.
In the felony case, Manchester police said there were notified by an employee of Center Hill Electronics, in Manchester, that they had received a bad check for almost $315 on June 25.
The name on the check was Consuela Kelly. According to police, Bowen, who knows Kelly, admitted on Aug. 25 to writing the check without his knowledge to buy a cellular phone and an electronic music player.
In the misdemeanor case, police in Bennington said Bowen was recorded by a store surveillance video camera putting the beer in a diaper bag.
Police said Bowen told them she saw the camera but didn’t think it was working.
In an affidavit, police said Bowen said she was “being stupid” and had the money to pay for the beer but explained her decision by saying she had been drinking before taking the beer.
Bowen, who pleaded innocent, was released without bail.
