Man denies charges in deadly crash, jailed on $200K

Alex W. Spanos, 23, is led into Rutland criminal court by a court officer for his arraignment this afternoon on charges in connection with a motor-vehicle crash that killed 17-year-old Carly Ferro.
A Rutland man today denied six charges, including manslaughter, in connection with a motor-vehicle crash that killed 17-year-old Carly Ferro.
Alex W. Spanos, 23, appeared in Rutland criminal court this afternoon wearing a dark suit and tie, chains on his wrists, ankles and waist.
He pleaded innocent to felony charges of manslaughter, gross negligent operation of a motor vehicle with death resulting, and two counts of gross negligent operation of a motor vehicle with serious injury resulting.
He also pleaded innocent to misdemeanor counts of reckless or gross negligent operation, and reckless endangerment.
Spanos was ordered held at the Rutland jail for lack of $200,000 bail. Police allege Spanos was inhaling chemicals from an aerosol can before he drove into a parked vehicle in a parking lot, crushing Ferro and causing a four-vehicle crash.
Ferro was hit after she left work at Discount Food and Liquidation Center on Cleveland Avenue to get into her father’s parked car Wednesday around 6 p.m. She died more than two hours later at Rutland Regional Medical Center.
