I have lived in Rutland 16 years, relocating my family here from California. I have recently been blessed with the opportunity to return to my hometown in order to pursue education/career goals that were all but abandoned.

I have been fortunate to develop many friendships in my time here; in fact, the best people I have known in my 51 years are right here.

I have been asked several times why I chose to raise my children here instead of California, and it wasn’t until Irene that I had a definitive answer: I experienced many earthquakes growing up in Southern California, and for the most part, I recall folks standing around and waiting for help. Vermont gets hammered by a hurricane, and with rain pounding and wind howling, people were knocking on their neighbor’s doors to check on their welfare. That’s why we stayed — that sense of community. I have never regretted the decision to raise my family here (my son recently shared that he was looking forward to raising his family here as well).

You have much to be proud of here. There are challenges, but the community I’ve come to love and proud to be a part of will surely rise to the occasion.

Thank you, Rutland (and all of Vermont), for 16 wonderful years.

    GARY BOYLES
