Lou, left, and Bill stand out in a pasture at Green Mountain College in Poultney Wednesday as the college community contemplates their fate. The days seem to be numbered for the oxen that have worked the fields at the college farm for more than a decade.

The oxen are retired and the school plans to turn them into beef product for the students. The animals are being retired because of injury and will be processed into beef products to be served in the college dining hall.

But not so fast, say animal right's advocates who have started a petition to save the animals.

The college farm produces vegetables and animal products for the dining hall and a community-supported agriculture program.
More than 3,000 people have signed an online petition started by an animal sanctuary in Springfield asking that oxen be spared.
