Vt. governor declares emergency ahead of stormThe Associated Press | October 28,2012MONTPELIER - Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin has declared a state of emergency in preparation for the arrival of a huge storm that's expected to bring high winds, heavy rains and widespread power outages.
Shumlin announced Sunday that he made the declaration so that Vermont will have access to National Guard troops and federal emergency response funds if needed.
Vermont was bracing for widespread power outages Monday and Tuesday as a megastorm rolls across the region, spawned by Hurricane Sandy heading from the south colliding with a wintry storm moving in from the west and cold air streaming down from the Arctic.
Heavy rains and sustained winds of 30-40 mph, with gusts topping 70 mph, were being predicted for Vermont.MORE IN This Just In
