MANCHESTER - A drive to collect needed items for Hurricane Sandy victims organized by the Orvis Company and Burr and Burton Academy, which ran from Thursday through Sunday, filled five tractor trailers as well as parts of a bus sponsored by the Rotary Club and a panel truck.

Three of the trucks went to Sea Bright, N.J., one went to New York City and one is scheduled to go to Brooklyn.

More than 200 Burr and Burton students and 100 Orvis employees packed 2,360 boxes of clothes, blankets, food, personal care items, cleaning supplies and tools for the storm-ravaged communities of New York and New Jersey, according to a press release from Orvis.

Orvis Senior Manager Don Benasich said the entire community went above and beyond for the effort.

“There were so many people and businesses that stepped up to help. … Last year, after Irene, other communities helped Vermont.

This year we get to help folks in New York and New Jersey. It’s just the right thing to do,” he said.

Bill Muench and Jim Raposa of Burr and Burton’s film department said a group of their students have already begun work on a documentary. Muench and Raposa will bring the students to New Jersey to meet with Sea Bright Councilman Reed Murphy and tour the disaster area with members of the National Guard.

The documentary will be screened locally when it’s finished.
