• Big Chair is back on Dec. 1

BENNINGTON – On Dec. 1, the owners of LaFlamme’s, a furniture store at the intersection of Harwood Hill and Northside Drive, will unveil the new “Big Chair,” an almost 20-foot tall ladderback chair.

After purchasing the building, Christopher LaFlamme promised to place the new chair outside the building where a similar chair stood for about 40 years when it was the Haynes & Kane Furniture Store. The chair was believed to be the largest of its kind when it was built in the 1960s but it was dismantled 12 years ago for safety reasons.

To celebrate the return of the landmark chair, LaFlamme’s is planning a party and an official unveiling on Dec. 1 at 11 a.m. with live music, food for sale, a free door prize raffle and in-store promotions. Replica chairs will be available free with any purchase of $100 or more.

Fans of the chair are encouraged to bring in photos of the original.

Everyone who brings in a picture will be entered into a contest for a special prize.

Jensen’s Restaurant in Bennington had the sign placed on the original chair, proclaiming it the “World’s Tallest Ladderback Chair,” and the restaurant’s owner, is donating the sign back for placement on the new chair.

Several special guests and dignitaries will participate in the unveiling and the public is invited to attend. For additional information on the Bennington store and the chair unveiling, call 681-7381.
