NORTH PORT, Fla. — The family and many friends of Joe Markey mourn his passing on December 16, 2012. Joe spread kindness and joy until his final day, and died suddenly at his home in North Port, Florida.
Joe was born to Mary Edith and Edward James Markey on July 14, 1931, in Bennington, VT.
He was raised in Manchester, VT, and graduated from Burr and Burton Seminary in 1950. He was a distinguished athlete at BBS, and was inducted into their athletic Hall of Fame in 2008 for his achievements on the football field, basketball court, and baseball diamond.
He was a graduate of Norwich University, where he was president of the Theta Chi fraternity.
He later served in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant in the Signal Corps.
He met his cherished wife Fran, of Eagle Bridge, N.Y., in 1952. They married October 2, 1954, and eventually made their home in Manchester Center, VT, where they raised their four children.
Joe took over his father’s electrical contracting business, E.J. Markey, Inc.
He was a member of the Manchester Volunteer Fire Department, attended St Paul’s Catholic Church, coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball, coached a Special Olympics basketball team, and was a member of VFW Post 6471. Before retiring, he was a master electrician at the Stanley Tools Eagle Square plant in Shaftsbury, VT.
Joe and Fran retired to North Port, FL, in 2004, where their door was always open to neighbors and friends.
Joe is survived by Fran, his loving wife of 58 years; son Dana and his wife Cheryl of Manchester, VT; son Tim and his wife Lynne of Concord, N.H.; son Rich and his wife Sheri of Fort Collins, CO; daughter Jill and her husband Leif of Ridgway, CO; and brother Paul of Arcadia, FL. Joe had eight adoring grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He will be remembered for his quirky humor, his original sense of style, and most of all for his willingness to always be there to help others.
A celebration of Joe’s life will take place in his home town of Manchester, VT, at a future date.
