    BENNINGTON — Roger G. Wood, 86, of Arlington, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington.

    He was born June 28, 1926, in Bennington, the son of George and Theresa (Mattison) Wood.

    He received his education in Shaftsbury schools.

    A World War II veteran, he served in the U. S. Air Force and attained the rank of sergeant during that time.

    He married the former Lillian Cross on April 13, 1952, at the Methodist Church in Bennington, with the Rev. Vogel officiating.

    He was employed for 19 years at the former BenMont Paper Company in Bennington. After leaving BenMont, he worked for several years at the Carthusian Monastery on Mount Equinox. Prior to retirement, he was employed for 14 years at the Alan Mattison & Sons Vault Company in Arlington.

    He served as a member of the Arlington Fire Department for more than 50 years. He was also a member of the East Arlington Federated Church and American Legion Post 69 in Arlington. He had been a Grange member since he was 14 years old. During that time he belonged to the Taconic Grange, Battenkill Grange, Pomona Grange, State Grange, and the National Grange.

    A harness racing enthusiast, he owned, trained and drove at various harness tracks in the area for many years. He also enjoyed camping in his RV, and was a member of the Good Sam Club and the Green Mountain Travelers.

    Survivors include his wife, Lillian C. Wood of Arlington; a son Michael Wood of Arlington; a brother John Wood of Shaftsbury; a sister Frances Hunt of Bennington; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

    Memorial services will be held Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, at 11 a.m. from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home. The Rev. Kathleen S. Clark, pastor of the Federated Church in East Arlington, will officiate.

    Burial will take place in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery in the spring.
