    POULTNEY — A funeral Mass for Margaret Bertolino McShane, who died on February 5, 2013, will be celebrated on Saturday, February 9, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Raphael’s Catholic Church in Poultney. The Rev. Father Daniel J. Jordan will officiate. Inurnment will be in the spring. There will be no public visiting hours.

    Mrs. McShane was born January 10, 1917, in Poultney, Vt., the daughter of Frank and Marianna (Tomasi) Bertolino. She was a graduate of Troy Conference Academy in Poultney, class of 1935, and the Mary Hitchcock School of Nursing, class of 1939. Mrs. McShane was a Registered Nurse and continued her post graduate education at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., and Simmons College in Brookline, Mass. She was employed at the Mary Hitchcock Hospital in Hanover, N.H., as a pediatrics supervisor and also at the Dartmouth Eye Institute from 1941 to 1944.

    She was commissioned an Ensign in the United States Navy Nurse Corps, serving during WWII in Newport, R.I. After an honorable discharge from military service, she attended the Albany College of Pharmacy. She married John B. McShane Sr. on December 1, 1945. The couple purchased McShane’s Pharmacy from John’s father, Owen W. McShane Sr., in 1949. She assisted her husband, who was a graduate pharmacist, with management of the store and pharmacy until 1971 when they sold the business.

    Mrs. McShane and her husband lived in South Burlington, Vt., from 1972 to 1981 and Mrs. McShane worked at the Given Health Care Clinic from 1972 to 1977. Mrs. McShane and her husband returned to live in Poultney in 1981.

    She was a lifelong member of St. Raphael’s Catholic Church where she served on various committees and also gave of her time to the religious education program of the church. She was also a Court St. Catherine #2, Catholic Daughters of America, for many years. She was instrumental in organizing the Red Cross mobile blood bank in Poultney and continued working as a Red Cross volunteer for many years. She organized the local alumni campus chapter of Green Mountain College. She served as a volunteer at the Young at Heart Club in Poultney and also served at the elementary school where she assisted with the One to One Reading Program.

    Survivors include a daughter, Marianna C. McShane and her husband Kenneth Sachs of New Haven, Vt.; two sons, John B. McShane Jr. and his wife Nance of Sudbury, Michael O. McShane and his wife Sybil of Montpelier; two sisters, Mrs. Herbert (Frances) Brandt of Plantation, Fla., and Mrs. Gerald (Helen) Foley of Poultney; three grandchildren, John B. McShane III (Samantha), Kathryn Vanderminden (Adam), and Matthew O. McShane (Sydney Crump); four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and her longtime friend and devoted caregiver, Cindy Goyette. She was predeceased by her husband, John, in 1988. She was also predeceased by five sisters, Mrs. Gaylord (Jane) Baker, Mrs. Ralph (Anna) Colvin, Mrs. William (Mary) McNamara, Mrs. Harold (Kay) Davis and Mrs. Hugh (Faye) Hanrahan.
