    Woman accused of stealing

BENNINGTON — A Gage Street teenager pleaded innocent on Monday to a felony charge of embezzlement after police said they believed she tried to take about $37 in clothing from a store on her second day working there.

Kayla Vosburgh, 19, of Bennington, was arraigned in Bennington criminal court on Monday on the felony charge and a misdemeanor charge of petit larceny. She was released without bail.

In an affidavit, Officer David Dutcher, of the Bennington Police Department, said he went to the Label Shopper in Bennington on Jan. 23 to meet with the store manager, Barbara Barber.

Dutcher said Barber told him Vosburgh was a trainee in her second day at the store on Jan. 22 when Barber saw her coming out of a dressing room. Barber said she then checked Vosburgh’s bag because the store has a policy to check all employees’ bags at the end of the day.

According to Barber, she found about $37 in clothing in the bag. She said Vosburgh told her that her mother had bought the clothes for her.

Dutcher said when he spoke to Vosburgh later, she said she had been a frequent shopper at the store before working there and bought the clothes that were allegedly found in her bag but Barber told Dutcher she never saw Vosburgh in the store before she started working there.

Dutcher said he also took a phone call from Vosburgh’s mother who called about her daughter’s charges. The mother denied buying the clothes for Vosburgh, Dutcher said.
