Last year the Vermont Legislature, in their collective wisdom, banned anyone under the age of 18 from indoor tanning. There was much discussion about the health risks to young folks and how tanning would affect their lives. I don’t believe the Legislature considered a tax to fix things.

Now these same folks are considering a tax to fix obesity, and the related health issues. I would suggest the Legislature take the same approach they did with indoor tanning. Just ban sugar-sweetened beverages for anyone under the age of 18. I would think one could apply the same logic used for the tanning ban. This would be a start. Perhaps next year they could ban cookies, cakes, and pies.
