The Board of Aldermen voted Monday night to charge for downtown parking on Saturdays.

The unanimous vote was to "support the current policy" of enforcing meter use on Saturdays.

Alderman Sean Sargeant, chairman of the Public Safety Committee, said the city's parking ordinance leaves it up to the Chief of Police to decide when motorists must feed the downtown parking meters and that the police department had told the committee that existing policy requires the use of meters from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

Board members agreed that the public would need ample notice prior to an enforcement effort.

The Public Safety Committee has a follow-up meeting scheduled on the subject for April 23.
