WALLINGFORD- Police are searching for a man who threatened a pregnant woman with a knife and stole her vehicle during an early-morning robbery today.

Around 5:52 a.m., Vermont State Police received a 911 call from the manager of the Smart Shop store at 172 North Main St. According to police, the manager, who is six-months pregnant, was arriving to open up the store for the day when she was approached by a man with a knife, who forced her inside the building.

“He did actually threaten her with a knife,” said State Police Detective Sgt. Albert Abdelnour.

The robber forced the manager into the bathroom, stole an undisclosed amount of cash and took the manager’s car keys, police said. Police later recovered the manager’s vehicle on Creek Road near the Route 4 overpass in North Clarendon.

The manager was not injured. There were no other employees or any customers in the store.

Police describe the robber as a male, between 5-feet 5-inches tall and 5-feet 9-inches tall with a medium build. The man was dressed entirely in black, including a black mask that completely covered his face.

Anyone who might have seen anything suspicious between 5 and 7:30 a.m., either near the store or where the vehicle was found, is asked to call the State Police Rutland barracks at 773-9101. Tips can also be submitted anonymously at www.vtips.info.
