Pope Francis I is reported as saying among the priorities of his pontificate is the need to protect the weakest and the poorest and to let tenderness open up a horizon of hope. This is a concise statement of the need of all of us to respect human life. This perspective provides the opportunity for renewed compassion, support and consolation instead of creating an environment where an individual’s worth is diminished.

The medical profession is historically a vocation dedicated to the service of life. It is unconscionable to rewrite this commitment of the medical profession and define service of life to mean a subjective concurrence to an individual wish. It is hopeful to think that the influence of one promoting human life can transcend geographic borders and other limitations. It would be nice to continue to hear news in the press that inspires the human spirit.
