Voted against tax, budget bills
When I ran for office, you told me that we cannot keep spending and taxing working Vermonters. You told me enough is enough. I listened to you.
I am pleased to report that I voted against the state tax bill and the state budget bill. Both the budget and the state’s tax scheme are out of control — increasing at double the rate of inflation for the last five years. We are driving businesses and jobs out of Vermont with these increases.
I voted against increasing the gas tax, rooms and meals tax, income tax and the cloud computing tax, culminating in $27 million in new taxes. Reps. Peter Fagan and Doug Gage joined me in voting against these increases and the budget.
I also heard from you that issues relating to welfare reform, public safety and blighted properties were important, and I agree. I sponsored H.417, the blighted property bill, and other related legislation important to Rutland City. I am working with members of the Senate to ensure we can get this language approved outside the budget and tax bills.
Rep. Herb Russell voted for all state tax increases and the bloated state budget for which all these new taxes are needed. His recent letter criticizing my vote and the vote of our Rutland region colleagues who wisely voted against the tax bill is not a true representation of the facts regarding our position on blighted properties or other important issues to Rutland City.
